COL Inquiry model

Will be presenting in groups end of Term 3 on our teacher inquiries to the COL using the below model:

Recording evidence

The following table may help to display steps taken towards achieving your goal. Can be displayed in a different format.
Can contain readings, observations, anecdotes; anything that assists in achieving your goal.

Growth Coaching Model

Videos of Daisy conferencing with Melody and Krysta doing a Growth Coaching session.
Observations of the video:
  • Often rephrases what Melody has said back to her to confirm ideas.
  • Exhausts different ways of improving practice; what is another idea of how you could achieve your goal?
  • "You've got some really good ways forward. Out of those things, what will you do?"
  • Growth Coach is recording ideas as they progress.
  • When will you begin? How many students will you conference with each day? Would you say within 2 weeks you could conference with your target students?
  • What will you need to conference with your students? - Observe other teachers, get examples of how they are using the writing symbols.
  • Progress into nitty gritty details to develop SMART+ER goal.
  • "The hardest part is to hold your tongue and listen. If you need to suggest something say "Would you mind if I made a suggestion?"

Growth Coaching Questions

Goal: What do you need to achieve?
Reality: What is happening now?
Options: What could you do?
What will you do?
start with:
  1. videoing a few students talking about their maths learning. I would like to video some of my target students to start with. A couple from each group (3 different groups) to gather benchmark data. 3-6 students
  2. Do some buddy talking and get their buddy to share back (TPS). I would buddy students to ensure buddies are in another maths group; make a maths sharing buddy.
  3. Visual recording, getting students to record a sentence or draw a picture. (GC suggestion of getting students to take pictures, Mads has done this in the past)
Tactics: How and when will you do it?
  1. Possibly do this on Wednesday. Just finishing a two week unit on number knowledge so the students would be reflecting on this unit. Aim to video all students on the same day as does not work Thursday/Friday and learning will lose impotice by next week.
  2. Reflecting on previous point, it may be better to get whole class base date using visual recording. Will be able to compare their reflections now to their reflections at the end of the unit. Will do visual recording on Wednesday instead.
  3. If time, would follow up with video on Wednesday. Use this information to develop a baseline statement to progress from.
  4. Be more precise about modelling language explicitly, get students to reflect at the end of the next unit and compare this week's reflections to end of next unit's reflections.
On a timeline: Wednesday Week 4.
Following this, would be at the Developing a Hunch/learning stage; reflect on what is working well.
Habits: How will you sustain your success?
GOAL:
